Aegis Energy, backed by £100 million in funding from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, is set to revolutionise the UK’s commercial vehicle sector by introducing the first clean multi-energy refuelling hubs. This ambitious project aims to accelerate the transition to low- and zero-emission vehicles by providing essential infrastructure for trucks and vans.

The project's initial phase will see five hubs operational by the end of 2027, with the first hub slated to open in early 2026. Locations include Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester. Beyond this, Aegis Energy plans to expand its network to 30 hubs by the decade's end, establishing itself as a leader in low-carbon infrastructure and e-mobility.

The hubs are designed to cater to a wide range of clean energy solutions, including:

  • Electric charging (with high-speed, bookable options).

  • Hydrogen fuel.

  • Bio-CNG.

  • HVO and AdBlue.

Each hub will have the capacity to simultaneously refuel or charge 40+ heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and 25+ vans. It will also offer secure parking, driver facilities, clean showers, quality food, and calm spaces.

Aegis Energy’s hubs will play a crucial role in helping commercial vehicle fleets decarbonise by addressing the logistical and infrastructure challenges faced by fleet operators. Each hub is expected to reduce 14,300 tonnes of carbon equivalent emissions annually, making it a critical piece in the UK’s clean energy transition.

The hubs will also bridge a key gap for operators who lack access to scalable depot infrastructure or at-home charging—issues that impact over 52% of van drivers in the UK.

Quinbrook’s investment marks its first venture into sustainable transport, complementing its broader portfolio of net-zero projects spanning solar, storage, grid support, and power solutions in the UK, US, and Australia.

Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, co-founder at Aegis Energy, said: “By providing public hubs with multiple clean energy charging and refuelling options, we’re supporting operators to choose how they want to make the transition. Quinbrook’s funding will help us ensure that critical energy infrastructure is reliably available where our customers need it and support millions of vehicles to make a once-in-a-multi-generational change.”

Keith Gains, managing director and UK regional lead for Quinbrook, added: “Targets under the UK’s ZEV mandate highlight the existing gaps in the infrastructure needed to provide accessible clean energy to transport fleets. This presents significant opportunities for Aegis Energy to build market-leading refuelling hubs, and we look forward to supporting its growth and expansion throughout the country.”

Cameron Barney Herbst Hilgenfeldt (financial advisor to Aegis Energy) facilitated the investment with support from ERM (commercial) and Dentons (legal). Quinbrook was advised by Norton Rose Fulbright, Arup, PKF Francis Clark, and Locktons on legal, commercial, technical, and financial aspects.
