Amazon Places Record UK Order for 148 Electric Trucks

Amazon is accelerating its push toward sustainable logistics in the UK with a multi-faceted expansion of its zero-emission delivery network. This bold initiative includes the largest-ever order of electric heavy-goods vehicles (eHGVs) in the country, the introduction of electric rail freight transport, and the rollout of on-foot deliveries in London—all aimed at slashing carbon emissions, easing urban congestion, and enhancing air quality.

Amazon is adding over 160 electric trucks to its UK fleet to scale its sustainable transport efforts. These include Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 and Volvo FM Battery Electric models, which will be operated by Amazon’s carrier partners. These zero-emission trucks will handle millions of deliveries annually, cutting down on fossil fuel reliance while keeping up with growing logistics demands.

“The combination of our – and the UK’s – biggest ever order of eHGVs, the UK’s electric rail network now being used to transport customer packages, and the launch of restocking on the move on-foot deliveries, all alongside our partners’ fleet of electric vans and e-cargo bikes, will help us move more customer orders across our fulfilment network with zero exhaust emissions,” said Amazon Logistics’ EU VP Nicola Fyfe.

Reducing Road Congestion and Emissions

Expanding beyond road transport, Amazon has begun utilizing the UK’s electric rail network to move packages, significantly reducing emissions compared to traditional road transport. The initiative currently operates on the West Coast Main Line between Scotland and the Midlands, with future expansion planned for additional routes.

“Decarbonisation is one of the biggest challenges facing the logistics industry, as businesses seek to match the need to move away from a reliance on fossil fuels with pressures from customers to maximise delivery efficiency,” said Logistics UK’s deputy director for policy, Michelle Gardner.

“Currently, almost 90% of the UK’s freight is moved by road, so it is important that the sector considers alternatively-fuelled vehicles and a shift to different transport modes in order to fulfil demand. Today’s announcement from Amazon demonstrates the sector’s willingness to change and its commitment to reducing overall emissions.”

On-Foot Deliveries: A Greener Approach in London

Amazon is taking sustainability a step further in central London with on-foot deliveries. Using restockable trolleys, couriers can deliver packages without relying on motorized transport, minimizing emissions and reducing street congestion in high-density areas.

Amazon’s UK sustainability strategy extends beyond its truck and rail initiatives. The company has also introduced electric cargo bikes in Belfast and Norwich, broadening its fleet of emission-free last-mile delivery options. With electric delivery vehicles now operational in over 45 cities across Europe, Amazon is reshaping urban logistics with a focus on clean energy and efficiency.

Amazon’s aggressive push for zero-emission logistics marks a pivotal shift in sustainable delivery, combining electric trucks, rail freight, and pedestrian-powered deliveries. As the company scales its efforts, it sets a new benchmark for eco-friendly e-commerce fulfillment, reinforcing its Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
