Google, H&M, Stripe Lead $80 Million Investment in Carbon Removal Credits

The Frontier commitment, a coalition led by Stripe, Google, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability, has announced $80 million in investments in carbon removal technologies. This bold move includes offtake agreements with CO280 and CREW Carbon, supporting the development of scalable CO2 removal solutions.

  • CO280 will receive $48 million to remove 224,500 tons of CO2 between 2028 and 2030.

  • CREW Carbon will secure $32.1 million to remove 71,878 tons of CO2 from 2025 to 2030.

This decision underscores Frontier’s mission to accelerate the adoption of innovative carbon removal technologies, with contributions from coalition members including Autodesk, H&M Group, Workday, and Salesforce, and purchases made through Frontier’s partnership with Watershed by companies like Canva, Wise, and Skyscanner.

CO280 focuses on retrofitting pulp and paper mills with carbon removal systems. Their process captures biogenic CO2 from recovery boilers, which is then transported and permanently stored in Class VI wells. Their first project in the U.S. Gulf Coast will deliver offsets under the Frontier agreement.

CREW Carbon, on the other hand, leverages wastewater treatment infrastructure, deploying systems to capture CO2 during treatment processes. Using alkaline minerals, they convert carbon dioxide into stable bicarbonate ions, safely stored in water bodies or subsurface environments for thousands of years. An advanced monitoring system ensures precise quantification of captured CO2.

By investing in technologies that utilize existing infrastructure, Frontier aims to stimulate the development of scalable, impactful carbon removal systems. These projects demonstrate how partnerships and innovative methods can create new pathways to address climate change at scale.

This move cements Frontier's role as a leader in supporting next-generation carbon removal solutions, pushing the boundaries of sustainability innovation, and setting a new benchmark for corporate climate action.
