The UK government has announced the relaunch of the Net Zero Council, introducing a broader coalition of voices to deepen collaboration between the public sector, private enterprises, civil society, and local authorities. This initiative aims to accelerate Britain’s transition to net zero, reinforcing its mission to become a clean energy superpower.
The revamped Council will serve as the primary forum for stakeholders, supporting the government’s strategic drive to decarbonize the economy. For the first time, it includes representation from civil society and local governments, bringing diverse perspectives to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities the transition presents.
Insights gathered from Council members will:
Inform government strategies.
Address cross-economy barriers to decarbonization.
Maximize economic and societal benefits from the transition.
Chaired by The Right Honourable Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Shirine Khoury-Haq, CEO of the Co-operative Group, the Council will focus on three core functions:
Expert Insight and Strategy Development
Providing strategic advice to shape government policies for achieving net zero targets.
Driving Decarbonization Across High-Emitting Sectors
Convening senior leaders to address systemic barriers and support businesses in taking action.
Helping industries unlock the benefits of transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
Outreach and Advocacy
Engaging with business networks to advocate for climate action and inspire leadership.
Promoting the economic and social gains of decarbonization efforts.
The Net Zero Council aims to build momentum across industries and regions by expanding its membership and focusing on cross-sector collaboration. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to tackling climate challenges while positioning the UK as a global leader in sustainable energy and economic transformation.
