The newly established Great British Energy has welcomed five non-executive directors to its start-up board as it prepares to lead investments in clean energy projects across the UK.

A Mission for Clean Energy and Growth

The government-backed, publicly-owned energy company aims to:

  • Accelerate clean energy investments.

  • Create skilled jobs and foster economic growth across the UK.

  • Protect consumers from energy price spikes through sustainable solutions.

Aligned with the Plan for Change and the UK’s ambition to become a clean energy superpower, the board will develop strategies to engage with the energy sector and communities, ensuring broad benefits from the clean energy transition.

Diverse Expertise to Build a Clean Energy Future

The appointees bring extensive experience across sectors such as renewable energy, workforce rights, and supply chain development:

  • Frances O’Grady: Former General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) with a strong background in workplace rights.

  • Frank Mitchell: Ex-CEO of SP Energy Networks, chair of Skills Development Scotland, and Scottish Energy Advisory Board member.

  • Kate Gilmartin: CEO of the British Hydropower Association, specializing in renewable energy and low-carbon project development.

  • Dr Nina Skorupska CBE FEI: Former CEO of the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology, with 40+ years of experience in roles at National Power, RWE, and Npower.

  • Valerie Todd CBE is an HR professional with cross-sector expertise and a non-executive director at Digital Catapult.

The board, led by Chairman Juergen Maier, will shape the Aberdeen-based company’s structure and guide its scaling efforts. With £8.3 billion in government funding allocated over this Parliament, Great British Energy is positioned as a central player in the UK’s clean energy transition.

Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Ed Miliband (pictured) said: “We’ve appointed a highly skilled start-up board to help Great British Energy hit the ground running in its mission to scale up clean, homegrown power.

“With a strong track record of delivering results across sectors, the new board members will now play an integral part in kickstarting Great British Energy, delivering our Plan for Change and building a new era of clean electricity for the British people.”

The appointment of these experienced directors underscores the UK government’s commitment to scaling up renewable energy investments, fostering innovation, and making Britain a global leader in clean energy technologies. Their collective expertise will drive forward the company’s mission to create a sustainable energy future while delivering economic and environmental benefits for the nation.
