Hydrogen developer and producer Hygen is set to expand its operations in Birmingham following a new funding deal from HSBC. The funding will bolster Hygen’s capacity at Tyseley Energy Park, a key hub in the UK’s growing hydrogen sector, and support the development of additional sites across the country.
Headquartered in Oxford, Hygen specialises in low-carbon hydrogen production facilities across the UK and Europe. At Tyseley, it produces green hydrogen, which is generated through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.
Hygen supplies this clean energy solution to major clients, including National Express, headquartered in Birmingham, and heavy machinery manufacturer JCB, helping these companies advance their decarbonisation initiatives.
With this new funding, Hygen is poised to increase capacity at its Tyseley plant and expand its footprint by developing new production facilities across the UK, further strengthening its role in the hydrogen economy.
Hygen's chief executive, Kevin Selleslags, said: "We are committed to leading the way in developing and delivering more low-carbon hydrogen projects across the UK, so HSBC UK's confidence in our business and the potential of hydrogen as a low-carbon energy source is truly encouraging.
"Securing this bank funding also sends an important signal to the market about the opportunities for this technology."
Hygen’s growth represents a significant step forward in the UK’s transition to clean energy, showcasing the potential of green hydrogen to drive decarbonisation across industries and regions.
