Manchester City Women’s Joie Stadium Completes Major Solar Panel Installation

The installation of an impressive 2,878 solar panels at Manchester City Women’s Joie Stadium is a bold statement of the Club’s sustainability goals, underscoring a commitment to environmental responsibility. As Manchester's city center's largest solar panel installation, this initiative further establishes Joie Stadium among the world’s most sustainable football venues.


This project at Joie Stadium represents a vital piece of a broader vision: a goal to deploy more than 10,500 solar panels across Manchester City’s facilities, including the expansive 80-acre City Football Academy. Designed to meet the Academy’s complete annual energy needs, this solar initiative aspires to power the training facility entirely through renewable sources, positioning it to function independently from non-renewable grids. Upon completion, the Academy could become one of the leading renewable energy hubs in the global sports arena.


As Pete Bradshaw, Manchester City’s Director of Sustainability, emphasized, “The completion of the Joie Stadium solar panel installation is an important step in the Club’s efforts to be net carbon zero by 2030. By transitioning to self-supplied renewable energy, we will guarantee a consistent flow of clean power that offsets the energy required to run the stadium and significantly reduce its environmental impact.”


Globally, stadiums are notorious energy consumers—requiring extensive lighting, heating, and broadcasting power. According to the Climate Neutral Group, sports venues contribute significantly to energy demand. Solar installations, like those at Joie Stadium, address this by cutting down reliance on conventional grid power and, in turn, reducing carbon emissions. Other clubs, such as Real Betis in Spain and Forest Green Rovers in the UK, have also committed to green energy solutions. However, Manchester City’s ambitious project with over 10,500 solar panels sets a new industry benchmark for sustainability in sports.


This ambitious undertaking has been made possible through a partnership with Jinko, the Club’s official solar panel provider. Known for its high-efficiency and durable panels, Jinko’s technology is specifically crafted to optimize energy output throughout the year, even in varying weather conditions. Jinko’s expertise in powering sports and commercial venues worldwide aligns seamlessly with Manchester City’s vision, ensuring Joie Stadium and the City Football Academy reap long-term energy benefits from this cutting-edge solar solution.


Beyond reducing its carbon footprint, Manchester City aims to leverage this green initiative to inspire sustainable practices among its extensive fanbase. In collaboration with Jinko, the Club will undertake educational efforts to showcase the environmental benefits of solar energy, encouraging supporters around the world to embrace more eco-friendly habits.


This ambitious solar initiative has been structured into two distinct phases. In Phase One, solar panels are being installed on the rooftops of several buildings across the City Football Academy, including City Studio, the Club’s digital content hub. This phase, expected to wrap up by the close of 2024, will deliver renewable power for various Academy operations. Phase Two will then extend the installation to thousands of ground-mounted panels, anticipated to be operational by the end of the 2024/25 season.


By embracing this scale of renewable energy, Manchester City positions itself as a leader in sustainable sports facilities. It sets a powerful example for clubs and communities worldwide on reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
