Renewable Power to Become the Leading Source of Energy in 2024

A groundbreaking report from Ember, a climate and energy think tank, reveals that low-carbon renewable energy is set to overtake fossil fuels as the primary source of power in the UK for the first time. The report, which examines power generation data from January to November 2024, highlights a transformative shift in Britain’s energy landscape.

Key Findings

  1. Renewables Lead the ChargeRenewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower now generate 37% of Britain’s electricity—up from 27% in 2021. This represents a remarkable 10% increase in just three years. The milestone marks a major victory in the UK’s transition toward a clean energy future. The government’s target of achieving 95% zero-carbon electricity generation by 2030 now seems more attainable than ever, with this rapid progress serving as a critical stepping stone.

  2. Fossil Fuels Fade into the BackgroundAt the turn of the century, three-quarters of the UK’s electricity came from fossil fuels. Today, that number has dropped significantly, with gas power generation set to decline by 13% in 2024 compared to 2023. In comparison, in 2000 three quarters of electricity was generated by fossil fuels and now it is at 35%

  3. Gas continues to Decrease: set to decrease by 13% in 2024 compared to 2023.

  4. Wind Power's Rise to ProminenceWind energy is on the brink of becoming the UK’s largest power source. While it currently generates just 1% less electricity than gas, it is expected to reach 29% of the energy mix in 2024. This growth is fueled by increased onshore wind capacity and enhanced infrastructure to harness this renewable resource.

Frankie Mayo, Ember’s Senior Energy and Climate Analyst, called the milestone a "testament to how much progress the UK has made," adding that “the renewables future is here.”

What’s Driving the Shift?

Several factors have contributed to this remarkable transition:

  • Expansion of Renewable Energy: Investments in wind, solar, and hydropower have dramatically increased their share of the energy mix.

  • Electricity Imports from Europe: The UK’s ability to import electricity from neighbouring countries has also bolstered the renewable energy supply.

This historic milestone is a clear indication that the UK’s energy system is undergoing a fundamental transformation. With continued investment in renewable infrastructure and policies to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels, Britain may be able to achieve its climate targets.

The shift is not just a victory for environmental advocates but a promising sign for global efforts to combat climate change.
