Schneider Electric, a leader in energy management and electrical components, has revealed plans to invest £42 million in a cutting-edge manufacturing plant in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. This "state-of-the-art" facility is being built to meet the rising demand for electric vehicle (EV) components, renewable energy technologies, and energy-efficient systems.

Set to open in 2025, the facility is designed as a "blueprint for sustainable operations," integrating advanced technologies to minimize energy waste while maximizing renewable energy use. Schneider Electric aims for the plant to achieve net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2, with on-site renewable energy generation and ultra-efficient systems like automated heating, cooling, and light sensors.

The facility will derive around 30% of its energy needs from an on-site solar power system, with photovoltaic (PV) panels covering half the roof. The remaining energy will come from certified renewable sources through the grid. The plant also targets an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating, a high standard for sustainable building design.

In addition to its sustainability goals, the plant is expected to create over 200 jobs. Scarborough has been a key manufacturing hub for Schneider Electric, where the company currently employs 450 people. It focuses on low-voltage switchgear production, which is essential for the growth of EV infrastructure and net-zero buildings.

"The region has long been part of our operational presence in the UK, and we're excited to expand this as part of our commitment to investing in the UK's green economy," said Kelly Becker, president at Schneider Electric for the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands. "The new facility in Scarborough represents a pillar of innovation in net zero and one which will be an industry benchmark for the transition to sustainable, energy-efficient buildings."

The facility will also prioritize sustainable transport options for its employees, featuring 30 EV charging stations and dedicated cyclist amenities, including bike racks, shelters, and on-site showers.

In collaboration with Natural England, Schneider Electric is undertaking habitat creation efforts for protected species at the site. Additionally, the company is focused on preserving as many of the site's existing trees and natural features as possible to enhance biodiversity and support local ecosystems.

Stephen Phipson, chief executive of manufacturing trade association Make UK, praised the plans for the facility, which were unveiled today, as "a marvellous example of how sustainable manufacturing can be achieved" while creating "many highly skilled jobs in the process".

"Green technologies are going to be the solution to many of the challenges that we face, and Schneider should be applauded for pioneering this facility," he added. "It is an exemplar model for other manufacturers to follow when they build new facilities."

This announcement follows Schneider Electric's £7.2 million investment last year to upgrade its manufacturing facility in Leeds. That project will create an additional 100 green jobs, further expanding the company's commitment to sustainable growth and innovation in clean technology.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, welcomed the "huge investment" in Scarborough, which he said benefits from "a well-established and thriving manufacturing sector."

"This new manufacturing facility will drive new, quality jobs in Scarborough and help us go beyond net zero to become England's first carbon-negative region," he said. "Leaders like Schneider attract other manufacturers, and we welcome investment as we look to become a production and advanced engineering hub of excellence."
