Stagecoach is making waves in the UK’s coach and bus sector with a groundbreaking sustainability initiative. In a sector-first move, the company is rolling out a free sustainability training programme to equip its top 300 suppliers with the knowledge and tools to embrace greener practices.
Teaming up with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) UK Network, Stagecoach aims to align its vast supply chain with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles. The Sustainable Suppliers Training Programme will provide in-depth education on sustainability fundamentals, including the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and internationally recognized sustainability reporting standards.
By embedding sustainability at the supplier level, Stagecoach is accelerating its path to net zero. The initiative ensures that key partners integrate eco-conscious strategies into their operations, reinforcing a collective push toward greener transport solutions.
From March to September, participants will complete four structured training modules delivered via a mix of live sessions and online learning.
“Sustainability is at the core of our business. We have a responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment wherever we can, and the Sustainable Suppliers Training Programme helping us to expedite the delivery of our ESG goals,” says Greg Ritt, Group Head of Sustainability at Stagecoach. “Thanks to the joint efforts of our sustainability and procurement teams and our partnership with the UNGC UK Network, we’re providing our chosen suppliers with the training, tools, and ongoing support they need to start their journey to sustainability and contribute to our bigger net zero picture.
“We’re excited to see the interest we’ve had already from some of our suppliers, which represents about £200 million in procurement spend, and look forward to more joining us on this journey.”
Stagecoach isn’t going it alone. The company is one of seven major UK businesses backing the initiative. Others involved include:
Aviva (insurance)
BDO (professional services)
Menzies Aviation (air transport services)
AVEVA Group (industrial software)
Crown Agents Bank (financial services)
Freshfields (law firm)
As sustainability continues to take center stage, Stagecoach’s proactive approach sets a new benchmark for the UK’s transport industry—proving that going green starts at the foundation.
