Triodos Bank Provides £15 Million Funding for Harrogate’s Green Home Development

Hammaad Saghir

In a significant boost to Harrogate’s affordable housing sector, Harrogate Housing Association has successfully secured a £15 million loan from Triodos Bank UK, setting the stage for the development of 200 new homes. This expansion will bolster the association’s portfolio of over 300 properties across the Harrogate district, marking a significant step forward in addressing local housing needs.

Each newly planned home will boast an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of B or higher, ensuring superior energy efficiency. Additionally, many properties will integrate renewable energy solutions such as air-source heat pumps and solar panels, enabling future residents to reduce energy bills while reducing their carbon footprint.

Harrogate Housing Association's roots date back to 1968 when it was founded in response to an initiative marking the 20th anniversary of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Since its inception, the organisation has remained steadfast in its mission: to provide high-quality, affordable rental homes for the people of Harrogate. More than 50 years later, this commitment continues to drive its vision.

Steven Brook, chief executive of Harrogate Housing Association, said:

This finance is very important for us as it enables us to go ahead with our plans to significantly increase the number of affordable homes we provide for the people of Harrogate. We are passionate about making housing inclusive for local people, who might otherwise be pushed out by the high property prices in the area. With Triodos Bank’s support, we are delighted to be able to create more high-quality housing to support local families.

As a bank dedicated to sustainable finance, Triodos Bank UK has played a pivotal role in supporting social housing projects. Since 2008, it has facilitated £500 million in loan agreements to 50 housing associations across the UK, reinforcing its mission to drive positive environmental and social impact.

Peter Borgers, senior relationship manager in the lending team at Triodos, added, "We’re very pleased to support Harrogate Housing Association in its plans for growth; its ambitious development programme will help provide a significant number of much-needed affordable homes in the area."

Established in 1980, Triodos Bank operates alongside global investment management activities in the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Spain, and Germany. As a co-founder of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), the bank advocates for a more transparent, responsible, and sustainability-driven financial sector.
