Volvo Trucks is set to redefine long-haul trucking with its new flagship electric model, the Volvo FH Aero Electric—a breakthrough that could accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight transport. Boasting a remarkable 600-kilometer range and the ability to recharge in just 40 minutes, this powerhouse represents a significant leap forward in electrifying heavy-duty logistics.
“This is a real breakthrough in zero-emission transport. Now, transport companies can operate really long distances with electric trucks without having to compromise on productivity. The superfast charging and high payload capacity make this a very competitive solution,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
“Electric trucks in long-haul operation will make an important contribution to reduce CO2 in our industry, since this is where you can save the most per truck. This is positive news for transport companies and for society.”
Slated for an official launch in Q4 2025, Volvo will begin taking orders for the FH Aero Electric with e-axle. This revolutionary driveline technology maximises battery capacity while optimising efficiency. While the full unveiling is on the horizon, Volvo has released exclusive images and technical details, allowing potential customers to sign a letter of intent to secure an early order.
Long-haul transport remains one of the most challenging sectors to decarbonise, contributing significantly to global CO2 emissions. Volvo’s new electric truck, equipped with fast-charging capabilities and extended range, signals a turning point for sustainable freight mobility.
Designed to integrate seamlessly with the new Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard, the FH Aero Electric supports both MCS ultra-fast charging and CCS2 charging up to 350kW. This enables a 20% to 80% battery recharge in just 40 minutes, making long-haul electric trucking a viable reality for high-mileage operators. But range and charging speed aren’t the only impressive features.
Volvo has engineered this truck with serious payload capacity. Configured as a 6×2 tag axle, it can haul up to 44 tonnes in the UK and 46 tonnes in the Republic of Ireland when paired with a standard tri-axle semi-trailer. This level of capability ensures that electric trucking remains competitive with diesel alternatives.
The FH Aero Electric owes its extended range and performance to its innovative e-axle driveline. This system frees up substantial space for additional battery storage. With up to eight onboard battery packs, the truck boasts a massive 780 kWh installed capacity, delivering the endurance needed for long-distance hauls.
“We have the industry’s most complete offer of electric truck transport solutions, and we have more than five years of experience in supporting thousands of customers, big and small, to go electric. Volvo Trucks is the go-to company for transport operators that want to start their decarbonisation journey,” says Alm.
This latest model cements Volvo’s position as a leader in the heavy-duty electric truck segment. With a diverse lineup of eight battery-electric truck models, the company has already revolutionised urban distribution, regional transport, construction, and waste management—and now, it is tackling the long-haul sector head-on. Since starting serial production in 2019, Volvo has delivered over 4,900 electric trucks across 49 countries, proving its commitment to large-scale electrification.
Volvo Trucks is on a mission to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, following a multi-faceted strategy that balances:
Battery-electric technology for urban and regional transport.
Fuel cell electric vehicles powered by green hydrogen for extended range.
Renewable-fuel combustion engines run on biogas, HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), and green hydrogen.
With its latest innovation, Volvo Trucks is not just introducing a new model—it’s reshaping the future of freight transport. The road to zero emissions is no longer a distant vision; it’s accelerating at full speed.
